| The Japanese Invented Waterboarding... |
[Aug. 4th, 2009|11:14 am] |
I had an enormous wad of wasabi with my sushi the other day and I just gotta say the experience is the closest the average civilian can get to waterboarding aside from drowning.
The Japanese came up with wasabi too. Coincidence or conspiracy? lol
Try having 10 of these at once:

BOOBIES- Today's Humbio 2A lecture was titled "Boobies". As the prof. said, both men and women in humbio are fascinated by them... they are just one example of the interesting developments of evolution... if you haven't noticed by now I'm talking about those birds in the Galapagos :D
There WAS in fact a cartoon reference to the OTHER use of the term yesterday though... it was an illustrated argument against the perfection of intelligent design with the caption: "Men have nipples..."
Yesterday Prof. Perry showed a powerpoint on the technology and strategy from the US Civil War and WWI; some of the most cheesy Civ War reenactment footage I've ever seen (thank you Ted Turner)... as in Confederates getting blown up by cannons POINT BLANK. ouch.
I'm going to embed my LJ page and my xanga page on a page hosted on my server. YAY. |

| Insane Practicing |
[Aug. 25th, 2005|02:16 am] |
Trying to find more time for violin practice... 8 hrs/day on weekends is not enough!
Preparing for WAMSO young artists competition:
Paganini Concerto in D Major Sarasate Carmen Fantasy Kreisler Praeludium and Allegro/Williams Three Pieces from Schindler's List (will they allow it?)
I didn't expect to even try to enter for this year's competition, but I just happened to pick up new pieces during the year that I now know fairly well. Hopefully two weeks of touching up and I'll be ready! (Yes, it is possible to learn 2/3 of the Beethoven Concerto from scratch in 5 days with hyper-intense practice! I know!).
Oh yeah, it's 2am... I just got back from work :P yay!@!! |

While listening to Sibelius during evening work hours today, I came up with some thoughts/connections:
Cryptic, for myself to expound upon later: Answered questions for Prof. Rorty: on Heidegger's critique/lack thereof of social change... "new things developed..." this should be on one of the lecture recordings. on Nietzsche's metaphysical-esque reverence for Nature on William James' explicit hint on an absolute also on the purpose of philosophy in culture (final lecture), and my answer = inspiration
I've been growing out of the micro learning mindset, which I've heavily rehearsed throughout high school and freshman year of college. Evidence: Excellent line-by-line debating, less so on macro/vote As indicated by the above questions, heavy micro analysis of texts... Intense absorption of solo music pieces/concerti ie Paganini, Bazzini, etc.
transition into macro? Evidenced by: my answer to final question in lecture stronger macro debate skills understanding of concerto music as a whole work of music and less as a solo part, Sibelius... Wieniawski 1 and 2! |

| Memoir |
[Aug. 25th, 2005|02:05 am] |
An extract of mine from www.violinmasterclass.com:
I hardly consider these to be "relationships," more like coincidences or experiences...
My very first violin teacher, whom I had for the longest consistent time of all my teachers, was recognized at age 14 by Nathan Milstein. Both my teacher and Mr. Milstein share a wonderful compositional and performing talent, and I am grateful to have had such an inspiring initial experience (in retrospect, as you will see). Oddly enough, I find myself having grown to love music much like Mr. Milstein did. We both began playing violin with disinterest and even occasional discontent (you should ask my first teacher; it was almost unbearable for him to teach me!), but a new love for music through the violin bloomed in the midst of my teen years. (See the new quote in my signature Very Happy, oh so true)
Yo Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax came to campus for a concert and student Q&A session. That's the closest few feet I've ever been near them and the first time I got to interact with them. Both of them are very interesting people outside of the musical domain as well; to sum that up, Yo Yo Ma ~ philosopher/heavy thinker/mystery man, Emanuel Ax ~ intrigued biologist/humorist.
Itzhak Perlman came to perform in January. I was able to see him up close and record some live footage. It was rainy that day -- compared to what I've seen him do on TV and heard him play on recordings, it seemed like he caught a cold or the lack of sun drained his energy that day... excellent playing nonetheless (I think he went to play at Disneyland the day or so after when the fire alarm went off in the middle of the performance...)!
Joshua Bell is an artistic partner with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, where I am interning right now Smile. Check out his concerts this fall and on!
I also love the wonderful Minnesota Orchestra musicians with whom I had an opportunity to rehearse with in the MMEA orch a few years back! Have you read the recent article about Orchestra Hall renovations? Osmo Vanska's comment is amusing!
I consider all the musicians and conductors I've played with wonderful people and as or more valuable to my life experience as any famous musician/conductor.
I would love to see other musicians perform/play/speak live, given that my massive exposure to a wide variety violin music has hit me like a train just recently. _________________ "Mother organized violin lessons for me in order to prevent me from thrashing the children of our neighbors" - Nathan Milstein

[Jul. 22nd, 2005|05:22 pm] |
I came back from my first day at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra yesterday and I must say their "office" is just incredible! They've got a nice comfortable work space for me and tons of rehearsal rooms and a stage! (this is all on one floor!) I get to listen on rehearsals too! Can't wait to get started on my projects :) (Joshua Bell is coming in Sept. and Nov.!).
Got several meetings next week to consider part-time work with other places...
When will I start reflecting on this past year? I don't know... time to go out for a run. |

[Jul. 15th, 2005|04:17 pm] |
I've finally decided to write something here, mainly for the purposes of recalling important issues/events that I may forget about. Not intended for public comprehension just yet.
Notes: Check NYTimes July 10 articles. Two sides of international security (intelligence and civil rights)
More to come... |
